Long out of print and nearly forgotten, this work serves as an excellent guide to NKVD intelligence operations from the advent of the Soviet state to Stalin's purges in the 1930's. Orlov, who adapted this version of his original manual from memory, paints an interesting picture of the Soviet emphasis on "secret" intel at the expense of open source intelligence. (One might argue that this was their greatest weakness as an organization, as their opponents' "secrets" were often flat-out available in or, at the very least, deducible from western journals.)
Much of the information will be familiar to the reader, either from other works or popular fiction, but the work itself is valuable for the non-nonsense presentation of these early techniques. NOTE: Dulles' "Craft of Intelligence" makes an interesting companion to this work.
